THE Island Explorer - a 55
seat tour bus which will operate
free of charge from December 28
through until March 13 - was of-
ficially unveiled last week.
This free bus service is part of
a new pilot project created and
sponsored by Phillip Island Na-
ture Parks, Destination Phillip
Island Regional Tourism Board,
Phillip Island RSL and the Bass
Coast Shire Council, as well as a
number of local businesses.
In a bid to reduce the number
of cars on the Island’s roads and
help alleviate over crowded beach
car parks over summer, the Island
Explorer is a pilot project which, if
successful, could become a more
permanent attraction during the
holiday season and year round.
There are two park and ride lo-
cations where you can leave your
car and board the bus for free.
These are located on the vacant
block next door to the Phillip
Island RSL and over at the San
The service will operate seven
days a week from 10am through
to 6.30pm. An extra service tak-
ing people to the Penguin Parade
operates Monday to Sunday from
7.35pm (January) out of San Remo.
This night service must be
booked in advance via www.islan-
dexplorer.eventbrite.com.au - to
ensure a seat especially during
peak season and weekends.
The day service will run subject
to capacity so users are encour-
aged to consider it in addition to
the local bus timetable.
Timetables will be available
from Visitor Information Centres
at Cowes and Newhaven, Phillip
Island RSL, Koala Conservation
Centre, Churchill Island, Penguin
Parade, The Nobbies and the sup-
porting sponsors; Wildlife Coast
Cruises, Rhyll Trout and Bush
Tucker Farm, Phillip Island Choco-
late Factory, Silverwater Resort,
The Big Wave, Phillip Island Grand
Prix Circuit, and A Maze’N Things.
