The jewel in San Remo’s crown
BRONWYN Pratt wears a gold ring
on her finger – which she designed
that is a constant reminder of her
hometown of San Remo.
“I call it a tidal ring,” says Bron-
wyn, who runs The Goldsmith’s
Gallery in the Bridgeview Arcade in
“It looks like the beach when the
tide has gone out.
“I’ll walk on the beach and see
driftwood and think it would make
an interesting piece.”
San Remo is fortunate to call
Bronwyn a local.
Trained as a gold and silversmith,
Bronwyn was for a decade the presi-
dent of the Gold and Silversmiths
Guild of Australia, has for many
years taught the craft – including in
workshops at her gallery, and has
a brooch in the National Gallery of
Australia jewellery collection.
She even traces her lineage back
“A few years ago I discovered my
family were gold and silversmiths in
Exeter during the 1700s,” she says.
Bronwyn describes her designs as
“flowing and organic”, inspired by
the natural environment and tak-
ing anywhere from a few hours to
months to create, from sawing and
soldering to filing and polishing.
“Even on my travels in the out-
back I’ll get ideas in the desert or
pick up some pearls in Broome or
stones in Lightning Ridge or Coober
Pedy. I build a lot of works around
“For that reason I have a lot of
Australiana – people want jewellery

The Goldsmith’s Gallery not only
showcases her work, but that of
about 25 other national and inter-
national jewellery artists.
“I’m not just a jewellery shop but
also a gallery,” she says, adding
for that reason she doesn’t operate
like a standard jeweller with mark-
downs and discounts.
“I don’t mark up in order to
mark down. The price reflects the
skill and craft, the time in making
a piece....I try and educate people
that this is about well-made, hand-
made, Australian-made jewellery.
It’s about supporting Australian
artists rather than mass-produced,
“The items you’ll find here are
unique, like nothing in any other
Meander through the gallery’s
glass display cabinets and there
is all manner of shiny and sparkly
delights, offering a variety of metals
including titanium and a beautiful

phires, as well as cognac and cham-
The gallery offers customers re-
pairs, re-setting, and redesign, with
Bronwyn working with her great
nephew, a second-year apprentice
jeweller, Jake Zubov, as well as a
bench jeweller Petr Hanzak.
“If we don’t have what a customer
is looking for we can make it.”
Bronwyn offers beginner and ad-
vanced jewellery classes, including
working with wax, pearl threading
and enamelling, also inviting in spe-
cialist teachers to instruct on such
techniques as lampworked beads.
She says she started the gallery in
2009 after running market stalls in
Cowes and San Remo.
“People would always tell me I
should open a shop so one day I
“They come down the arcade and
ask how do I survive back here? But
I must be doing something right.
“I’ve always been good with my
hands. I love making it, but I don’t
always wear it.
