Mystery surfers save 11-year-old’s life
From page 1.
Other comments suggested mandatory teach-
ing of rip identification to all children.
Earlier this year off-duty lifeguards and local
surfers averted a mass drowning when a group
of people wading in the shallows were washed
out to sea, taking the life of one woman.
At the time president of the Phillip Island
Boardriders Bill Yusko said surfers have come
to the aid of many struggling swimmers.
“Surfers are the unsung heroes after hours
and before hours,” Bill said.
He said because surfers understand the na-
ture of the ocean, they don’t tend to panic like
“As soon as they get in trouble, people get rid
of their floatation device and try and swim, but
that’s when they’re gone. They do it all the time.
“Because we have floatation devices we can
get to people quickly.”
Planning for Phillip Island Road
Improving safety and traffic flow on Phillip Is-
land Road is gaining momentum with planning
progressing for three key sections of the road.
Identified in the 2014 Phillip Island Inte-
grated Transport Study (PIITS) as a priority,
VicRoads understands the long term planning
for Phillip Island Road is crucial to the Island’s
future and its status as one of the state’s pre-
miere tourist destinations.
Issues identified by the community as part
of PIITS included improved transport during
peak holiday periods with improved safety, eas-
ier access onto Phillip Island Road from side
roads and improved traffic flow.
Since then, VicRoads has undertaken special-
ist modelling to understand the needs of Phillip
Island and what will serve its tourism industry
and community now and into the future.
VicRoads Eastern Region Acting Regional
Director Harvey Dinelli said proposed round-
abouts at Woolamai Beach Road and Back-
beach Road had been strongly supported,
while a more complex proposal at Newhaven
was still being explored.
Mr Dinelli said the proposed changes at Ne-
whaven were integral to the wider Phillip Island
Road system and would ensure Backbeach
Road and Woolamai Beach Road roundabouts
worked to their full potential.
“Consultation has occurred at each stage of
the process, with the community providing
great feedback and ideas on how we can create
long term safety and traffic flow improvements.
“More recently we have focussed our dis-
cussions with the landowners and businesses
along Phillip Island Road in Newhaven.
“We’ll soon be engaging with the broader Ne-
whaven community for further input and feed-
back,” Mr Dinelli said.
“This is vitally important for the long term
future of Phillip Island. At this stage of plan-
ning, Newhaven is a key element which we see
as ultimately creating a vibrant gateway and at-
tractive activity centre while making journeys
safer and more enjoyable.”
Mr Dinelli said feedback from the PIITS
Community Reference Group, the Bass Coast
Shire Council and local landowners had been
appreciated, and he was looking forward to Vi-
cRoads sharing more information with the Ne-
whaven community over the coming months to
gain valuable feedback.
“While we thank all who have contributed to
the process, I can reassure everyone that this is
not the end of our consultation. We are looking
forward to further discussion as we continue to
progress our planning for the overall benefit of
