LOCAL racing action is set to figure promi-
nently from next weekend with Woolamai and
District Race Club poised to host several more
meetings over the summer months.
This coming Sunday, January 7, will see the
second race day of the season and is expected
to draw a sizeable crowd.
With Phillip Island, San Remo and surround-
ing regions drawing huge visitor numbers over
the holiday season, the club will hope to capi-
talise on what is sure to, once again, be an out-
The picnic race season is now in full swing
and is proving to be more popular than ever.
Crowd numbers continue to rise, fields are
strong and trainers and riders come from a
wide ranging circumference to chase victory.
Bendigo-based jockey Courtney Pace has
surged to an early lead in the overall rider’s
premiership and will again be looking to so -
lidify that lead with a positive performance on
A strong book of rides generally presents for
Pace, however this is testament to not only her
skill but work rate as well.
Hot on her heels are several other jockeys
who will be keen to stamp their authority.
Toby Lake is another rider who has kicked
off in fine style this season. New dad Grant Sec-
combe will be hungry for more winners and
young Moe jockey Caitlin King has an air of
confidence after booting home a treble at the
last meeting here.
King rode superbly on that occasion and will
no doubt be looking for history to repeat.
Cranbourne rider Reece Goodwin looks to be
just starting to hit stride this season and can be
expected to again feature prominently.
Few ride better around the tricky circuit
than Goodwin, who possesses an innate sense
of timing with his horses when making their
charge toward the finishing post.
Seymour based trainer Barry Goodwin al-
ready holds a commanding lead in the overall
trainer’s premiership and will be looking to
add to the tally.
Several other stables however will be keen to
collect the major share of the increased prize
money on offer.
Mornington trainer Rebecca Waymouth has
several horses poised to strike winning form
and local trainer Shae Eden loves winning rac-
es on what was originally his home track.
Always willing to support the Woolamai meet-
ings, Eden gets plenty of satisfaction training
winners there, which also gives local jockey and
stable rider Sophie Logan opportunity to dis-
play her talent and add to her winning strike
An early look at the forecast is predicting
cooler conditions than normal for this time of
year which may be a welcome relief for many.
The day is being promoted by Country Rac-
ing Victoria as one of the “Kids’ Summer of
Country Racing” days on the calendar and Kelly
Sports will be in attendance.
They have around four hours of free, super-
vised, fun activities for kids and the first 300
children under 16 through the gate will receive
a ‘We Love Animals’ backpack containing vari-
The jumping castle, face painting and a rov-
ing ‘Pockets’ the clown will be there in addition
for the little ones.
As always at the picturesque track, picnic
rugs and barbecues will adorn the lawns under
the shade of the elm trees.
Food and drink prices are very reasonable
and all profits from these support various
sporting and community clubs in the Bass
An inspection of the track late last week
showed it on schedule to race in outstanding
condition come Sunday, which just adds to an
already enticing midsummer afternoon’s racing
