Water safety is no yolk

Life Saving Victoria (LSV) is urging Victorians to take the time this long weekend to check the conditions, read the signs, and know your limits before heading out on our waterways this long weekend.

Victorians are 51 per cent more likely to drown on a public holiday than any other day of the year, and after Victoria experienced its highest summer drowning total on record, with 26 lives lost, LSV

General Manager, Health Promotion and Communications, Dr Bernadette Matthews encouraged people to research locations before visiting.

“Easter is a great time of year to spend time with family, especially around some of our most treasured Victorian travel spots, from the coast to camping, but it is vital to learn and read about the waterways you are visiting,” Dr Matthews said.

“You might be celebrating at home, on the coast, or by river or lake. No matter where you are, check the conditions before heading out and once you arrive, check any signage for knowledge about the waterway. “

Ambulance Victoria (AV) Director Emergency Management Justin Dunlop said swimming wasn’t the only danger to consider when enjoying the state’s waterways.

“A lot of our call outs to inland waterways are where people have unintentionally found themselves in a body of water from things such as slips and falls,” he said.

“These situations can be more dangerous, because the patient is totally unprepared to be in that body of water and can sustain significant injuries.”

Mr Dunlop said it’s crucial to know how to get help if needed.

“If you see someone in trouble in the water, alert lifesavers or call Triple Zero (000) immediately,” he said.

Victorians are also urged to explore waterways with a friend and check Beachsafe.org.au before heading to a beach, or boating.vic.gov.au for marine location conditions.

Know your limits. It’s never been more important to be aware of your capabilities before entering a waterway, and this is more vital when drinking alcohol. Postpone your alcohol for after your aquatic activities so you don’t impair your judgement.

Don’t be an egghead this Easter. These small actions can make the difference between a great weekend and a tragedy.
