From Monday October 20 to Sunday October 26, BirdLife Australia is inviting people of all ages to take just 20 minutes out of their day to spot, identify, and count the birds around them.
Last year, more than 57,000 participants submitted nearly 130,000 checklists and logged more than 4.1 million birds across the country using the free Aussie Bird Count app. Bold, adaptable species - the Rainbow Lorikeet, Noisy Miner, and Australian Magpie - again topped the charts. Will they swoop in for the top three once more in 2025?
How to take part
- Pick your spot – anywhere you like, from your backyard to your favourite park or garden
- Spend 20 minutes quietly observing the birds you see
- Submit your count using the Aussie Bird Count app, which will help you identify the birds you see and hear
You can go out and count as many times as you like during Bird Week as long as each count lasts 20 minutes and is submitted separately.

Career expo returns
Employment
The Bass Coast Jobs & Careers Expo returns to Cowes on September 5, with another event hosted in Wonthaggi on August 7.
Now in its fourth year, Bass Coast Shire Council said the expos have become a vital connection point between local job seekers and employers, providing direct pathways into a wide range of industries, including tourism, healthcare, construction, education, mining, hospitality, conservation, and more.
Delivered by council in partnership with Workforce Australia and the Victorian Government's Skills and Jobs Centre, "the free expos offer something for everyone, whether you're looking for your first job, a new direction, or additional work," council said.
"You can also chat to local training providers and support services about career pathways, traineeships and apprenticeships."
A physical Jobs Board will also be on display, featuring current vacancies from local employers, including those who may not be exhibiting on the day, so you can explore even more job options and find the right fit.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, encouraged the community to take full advantage of what's on offer.
"We've heard amazing stories of people walking into these expos unsure of what to expect, and walking out with their dream job," Cr Halstead said.
"That's what this is all about: opening doors and giving you the chance to show up, have a conversation, and discover what's possible. If you've ever thought about working locally, this is the perfect place to meet some of Bass Coast's best employers and take that first step."
Both the Wonthaggi and Phillip Island expos will feature hands-on support from the Gippsland Skills and Jobs Centre, offering free one-on-one advice to help polish your resume, improve your interview skills, and put your best foot forward.
The Phillip Island Expo will also include an extra opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs, with the Business Victoria Small Business Bus on site.

Phillip Island Landcare are revegetating the Phillip Island recreation reserve, with a three-year $60,000 project that will see 9000 trees planted.
Phillip Island Landcare last year started the project, which is funded by AusNet, in the southeast corner of the 80-acre site, with volunteers planting 1500 tubes of trees, in an area protected by wallaby and rabbit proof fencing.
There will be a planting day on August 16.
Landcare's David Rooks said across the three years, there will be seven different trials carried out, to see which is the most successful revegetation method, including a low temperature burn to encourage natural revegetation, scarification of the ground, as well as mulch and water crystals and natural generation.
"These plots will help assess the success of outcomes to help guide future decisions," David said.
"Within each method half of each trail will use rabbit guards, the other half will be without rabbit guards. This will help us determine the impact purple hens and other birds may have on the new plantings.
"Purple hens are renowned for removing new tubestock but find it more difficult with guards."
He said the trial sites will be mapped through Google Earth to measure changes.
"What we learn from this project will be used to protect and enhance other vegetation across this 80-acre site," he said, adding a sign trail will eventually share information with the community.
The site is owned by Bass Coast Shire Council, whose staff have also undertaken plantings, and for years has been full of rubbish, weeds and animal predation.
In support of Tradies Health Month, the Phillip Island Health Hub Auxiliary is holding a community-focused sports trivia night and mental health information session on Saturday August 16, at the Phillip Island Football Netball Club.
The event aims to raise funds for the new Phillip Island Community Hospital while also shining a light on the importance of mental health in the trades sector.
The Health Hub Auxiliary is a volunteer group committed to supporting the local health service by raising funds for essential medical equipment for the new community hospital. This trivia night is one of several initiatives aimed at connecting the community while raising awareness around mental wellbeing — particularly for those in high-pressure trades and construction roles.
Two guest speakers will share their insights on mental health and resilience. Dr Krista Fisher, a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne, will speak about her research into anxiety in men, where she explored how anxiety shows up in young men’s lives, and how it can contribute to depression, substance use, and even suicide.
She will be joined by Luke Ross, a registered psychologist and master trainer at Social Intelligence Group, who will discuss practical strategies for managing mental health and building emotional intelligence in the workplace.
Attendees will also receive takeaway information packs featuring mental health resources, including support for coping with relationship breakdown, thanks to
Headspace, whose trusted materials are included to help young people and families navigate life’s challenges.
The event will run from 7pm to 10pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm, at the Phillip Island Football Netball Club. Tickets are $25 and can be booked online.
Attendees are invited to bring their own snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase at the bar. The event will feature a lively sports trivia quiz, as well as raffles and giveaways, with sports-themed prizes on offer.

Phillip Island Nature Parks consultation sessions aim to capture community sentiment on the future of the Summerland Peninsula.
The sessions are the first stage in putting together a new masterplan for the Summerland Peninsula.
Jarvis Weston, the Nature Park's General Manager for Infrastructure and Planning, said the community's input is an important part of development of the new plan.
He said the consultation had deliberately been left open-ended, to get a real feel for what the community wants.
"We could have given some parameters and some ideas and concepts, but then you potentially start to stifle the innovation and creativity," Jarvis said.
After the initial consultation, a draft masterplan will be put together, and then presented to the community for further feedback, hopefully around October, with the masterplan finalised by the end of the year.
Anyone who can't attend the sessions for this round of consultation, can also fill in an online survey at www.penguins.org.au, or email thoughts and ideas to community@penguins.org.au
