This month’s Phillip Island Movie Club film, on Thursday May 25 at St Philip’s, is the film “A Fantastic Woman”.

Released in 2018, it is a Chilean drama written and directed by Sebastian Lelio.

The film follows transgender waitress Marina Vidal (Daniela Vega) in the devastating aftermath of her 57-year-old husband Orlando’s (Francisco Reyes) sudden death.

Moonlighting as a nightclub singer, Marina soon finds herself having to process her grief whilst becoming the focus of everyone's suspicions surrounding her husband's untimely death.

Looked upon as a murderer by the investigating authorities and Orlando's family, Marina is banned from her husband's funeral and questioned and harassed relentlessly before she can fully come to terms with her grief as she tries to make everyone around her see the truth.

Lelio approaches this issue with sensitivity and empathy. “A Fantastic Woman” is filmed with light and shadows, showing an amorphous world, that is borderline between night and day, consciousness and unconsciousness, it is blurred, reflecting Marina’s reality.

The film is rated R for language and runs for 104 mins.

The film starts at 8pm and the doors open at 7.30pm.

There are nibbles provided and please bring a cup for tea or coffee.

Entrance is by membership only, as this is a requirement of Film Societies for buying the rights to show the film.

There is a 2024 waiting list and any queries or applications for a membership form can be made at phillipislandmovieclub@gmail.com

The next Movie Club film “Empire of Light” will be on Thursday June 22.
