For cabinet maker Mitch Rafferty from Joinery Smooth, nothing beats working with wood.

The bespoke cabinet maker, based on Phillip Island, offers a personal and individual service for clients wanting to install cabinetry in a renovation or new home.

Operating for three years, Mitch brings almost 20 years of experience in the trade, working extensively with kitchen, laundry, household and other domestic cabinetry.

Starting his own business has allowed him to focus more on his favourite material – wood – and provide a personalised service.

From design through to construction and installation, Mitch works closely with his clients.

“I can come to your house, talk about what you want, and provide a quote and a design.

“Then I’m the person who constructs it and comes and installs it, so I’m with you every step of the way,” Mitch said.

“I really like to work one-on-one with my clients.”

He says the personal approach contrasts with many of the bigger operators.

“I’m here from the start to the finish of the job, so you are just dealing with one person.”

While Mitch is happy to work in any material, timber is where his heart is.

“If someone has their heart set on using timber, I have a lot of expertise in that area. I can make timber furniture, doors, vanities, side tables and benchtops.”

Local

For his projects, Mitch likes to locally source recycled timber from across Gippsland.

“It is interesting to get old wood and bring it back to its original state. I love seeing the grain and the fact that it’s not uniform,” he said.

“There’s a lot of interesting stuff that flows through the timber. Every piece is unique.

“I’m happy to talk with people about the options they want for their place; to suggest which wood you might need and what looks good with what.”

He will also organise the associated trades with any renovation and installation, such as painters, plasterers and stone masons.

No job is too big, or too small to consider.

“I have done jobs that involved all the joinery in a new building, and others where people just needed an add on pantry.

“There’s no hard sell, and no obligation to buy. I’m happy to talk to people about what the options are.”
