AFL legend, David Parkin, will be the keynote speaker at an information evening on prostate cancer awareness.
The Rotary Clubs of Bass Coast and South Gippsland is holding an evening at the Wonthaggi Club on Thursday May 25, starting at 6.30pm.
Over a two-course meal, guests will hear from Alan White, author and Convenor of the Bayside-Kingston Prostate Cancer Support Group. Then keynote speaker, David Parkin, will talk about his own journey with prostate cancer.
David has a family history of prostate cancer. His father and grandfather both died from the disease. David was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 65 years of age and was successfully treated.
“The Phillip Island, Wonthaggi and Leongatha regions have a higher death rate from prostate cancer than the Australian average, according to the Australian Cancer Atlas,” said Alan White.
Alan stresses the need for men to understand the importance of regular health check-ups, which should include the blood test for PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen).
Nicky Chung of the Rotary Club of Wonthaggi highlights the importance of raising awareness for the health and wellbeing of the local community.
Another aim of this event is to promote the benefits of a local Prostate Cancer Support Group for men in the Bass Coast and South Gippsland. Allan Cunningham, Convenor of the Latrobe Valley Prostate Cancer Support Group, will also be on hand to discuss how a local group could be run.
Tickets for the event cost $25 per person. All profits will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the Male Bag Foundation.
Book online at: www.trybooking.com/CHRCW, or email rotaryclubwonthaggi@gmail.com, or contact Nicky Chung on 0475 871 589.
