There is a baby boom happening across the state, and the Bass Coast is no exception according to Wonthaggi Hospital’s busy Maternity Service.
But there’s an added bonus for babies born at Wonthaggi.
A new “Baby Bootie” program led by local resident Liz Purvis, means every baby born at the hospital receives a beautifully crocheted pair of booties.
The booties come with a card that says “Every child is a gift. Here is a hand-made crochet gift especially for you. This comes from a local woman, made with love xx.”
Tiny Erik Cicala born on April 13, weighing 4.2 kilos, was the first baby to receive the special gift.
His father Ricky, who was also born at Wonthaggi Hospital was presented with the booties by Liz, who has crocheted for fifty years.

Liz said the idea for the baby bootie program came about when her own health deteriorated, meaning she had a fair bit of spare time.
She decided to dedicate her time to crocheting booties so a pair can be given to every baby delivered in Wonthaggi Hospital.
Liz has won numerous prizes for her crochet work, including at the Royal Melbourne Show.
Nowadays, she makes around 10 pairs of beautiful booties a day and said her aim is to have other crochet enthusiasts, and anyone interested in donating wool, contribute to the “Baby Bootie” Program.
She is keen to create a “Baby Bundle” gift with knitted bunny rugs, jackets, jumpers and of course, the gorgeous booties.
These special gifts are in addition to the safe and high-quality care provided by the Midwives, Obstetricians and nursing staff at the newly renovated maternity section of the hospital.
