Banfields drumming up the good life
The benefits of drumming for older people include reducing tension, anxiety, depression and stress.
Residents of Banfields Aged Care are letting their inner rock stars come out.
The staff recently introduced Drumming Circles for residents, as a way to increase their health and wellbeing.
Robyn Montague, Banfield’s Lifestyle Team Leader, hit upon the idea after listening to a podcast about drumming and the benefits it had for older people.
These included reducing tension, anxiety, depression and stress, as well as boosting the immune system and increasing energy.
Robyn said other benefits of drumming were increased social interaction and improved mobility, posture and motor skills.

Drumming can also be used as a way to help control chronic pain – and letting loose with the drumsticks was a good way to release negative feelings.
“You can see our resident drummers are loving the experience of not only the beat of the music but the socialisation this activity allows,” she said.
“Lisa Pratt, a lifestyle team member is more than happy to let the drumsticks fly when she is leading the group of drummers.
“This new activity is definitely bringing out their inner rock and roll persona,” Robyn said.
