Bass Coast Series battle gets underway
The Bass Coast Series 2024 kicks off this Sunday January 21 with the 26th Cape Paterson Aquathon, organised by the Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club. The series also includes the Channel Challenge and the Cowes Classic.

The Bass Coast Series 2024 kicks off this Sunday, January 21 at 10am in Cape Paterson.

The 26th Cape Paterson Aquathon, a 400m swim and 4.4km road race, is organised by the Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club, with the swim held at Cape Paterson's First Surf Beach.

It is the first leg of the three-part Bass Coast Series, which also includes the San Remo Channel Challenge and the Cowes Classic.

"We are excited by the interest from the community in participating in this event, and I confidently predict the 26th event will have record numbers," said Ray Rust, Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club President.

Conditions on Sunday are predicted to be ideal, given the weather forecast and mid-tide.

The Cape Paterson Aquathon is a popular local event.

"It takes an incredible community consisting of volunteers, entrants, spectators and sponsors to create the friendly atmosphere on the day," says Karen Marangio, co-ordinating registration.

"Last year, despite a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, many competitors returned to participate and reconnect with each other.

"It felt like a celebration, and showcased the value of such events for all involved."

This sustained support includes many from Phillip Island, including the Phillip Island Turtles, Woolamai SLSC and others who simply enjoy ocean swimming and running.

For instance, Mark Donohue from Newhaven chalked up his 15th Cape Paterson Aquathon last year.

You can enter as an individual or a team, or come down on the day to cheer and soak up the atmosphere.

"The event is our annual standout event, the key fundraiser, with funds raised going directly to life saving operations so that we can continue to safely patrol our beach" Ray concluded.

"And we look forward to seeing you on the beach."
