A much-loved Cowes bakery and neighbouring fish n' chip shop were gutted by fire this morning.
The blaze started in Kim's Bakehouse and spread to Riley's Fish n' Chips on Thompson Ave, between the Esplanade and Chapel St, about 2am.
About 60 firefighters from 17 fire fighting appliances - some as far as Oakleigh in Melbourne - battled the flames for two hours and were able to stop it spreading to the neighbouring Priceline Pharmacy.
Two police units from Wonthaggi attended and Sgt Sean Kennedy this morning said it was still an active fire scene and CFA fire investigators were attending, with more details to come.
