PIBC's submission to the council's Fair Access Policy and Action Plan states their commitment to increasing and improving opportunities for women, girls and diverse groups. Of PIBC's 20-person main committee, 11 identify as female and nine male.

Phillip Island Boardriders Club (PIBC) have submitted their response to Bass Coast Shire's draft Fair Access Policy and Action Plan.

PIBC stated they are committed to increase and improve opportunities for women, girls and diverse groups in surf sport and recreation within Bass Coast and beyond.

A spokesperson for the club said, from an organisational structure, "PIBC consider themselves, leading the field with female representation on the board, executive committee, governance and in sporting competitions participation".

Once described as a "boys' club'', this season's PIBC's president, treasurer, secretary, media coordinator, facilities coordinator and Supergroms captain all identify as female. Of PIBC's 20-person main committee, 11 identify as female and nine male.

Treasurer Jo O'Reilly Stubbs said PIBC has recently adjusted their membership forms to include nominated pronouns instead of gender, as another step to improved inclusivity.

"From the next financial year and season we will have more accurate data on our membership base, and progress to further work towards our inclusivity goals.

"This action was recommended by one of our committee members Alisha Hill, who is also a mother of one of our 23/24 Supergroms."

PIBC recognise that by creating a welcoming environment for women, girls and other diverse groups, this can remove barriers to participation in sports clubs, increase membership and positive culture.

PIBC have many options for women in club competitions, including Supergroms (5yrs to approx. 14yrs), Cadet Females (Under 16), Junior Females (Under 18), Senior Women's (35+), Open Women's and Longboarding events.

In addition, PIBC has also created girls' development under the youth development program, a health wellbeing program (surf and yoga), and in partnership with Surfing Victoria and Surfing Australia offer subsidised surf industry courses such as judge and contest director accreditation to enable regional youth career pathways.

PIBC always welcome new members for committee, surfing and social membership. For further information or to be involved with PIBC visit www.pibc.com.au or email contact@pibc.com.au

All Victorian Councils are required to have a Fair Access Policy in place by July 1, 2024, under the State Government's Fair Access Roadmap. Bass Coast Shire Council's community feedback is currently open until April 21, to ensure their Policy and Action Plan meets the needs and expectations of the Bass Coast community.
