Grand opening of the new soccer change rooms

It was a wet and freezing cold day at the Phillip Island Soccer Club on Sunday, as we hosted Drouin Dragons for the grand opening of the new change rooms.

Jordan Crugnale MP (Member for Bass) and Cr Bruce Kenny attended the grand opening. We’d like to thank the state government, and Jordan for their contribution through the community sports infrastructure stimulus program and the female friendly facilities funding program and thank the world game facilities fund for the soccer club to be able to deliver this major upgrade of the pavilion for our community.

The community will benefit from the new fit for purpose change rooms, showers, toilets and storage areas, which are used by the Phillip Island Soccer club along with other local sporting clubs and schools who also use the facilities.

There are now dedicated toilets for spectators and casual hirers of the reserve.

Under 12A

It was a wet and windy game for the under 12A team that hosted Drouin. In a tight contest it was Drouin that kicked the only goal for the game. The 12A team finished fifth on the ladder therefore just missed out on playing finals.

Under 12B

Sunday, August 14 was a cold and wet home game for the Under 12B team who played against the Drouin Dragons Yellow team in a special Cup Round.

Drouin scored two goals quickly in the first half of the game with both teams playing excellent soccer.

In the second half, Drouin scored a further three goals.

By this time visibility was low with sleeting rain and strong winds lashing the game.

All the players were soaked through and did incredibly well to put forward a strong contest in difficult conditions and always with a smile on their faces!

The Breakers lost to Drouin 5 - 0.

The team now has one last chance to face up to the Drouin Dragons Yellow team in the Cup final, scheduled for Saturday, August 27 in Trafalgar.

The Under 12B team is also sitting first on the ladder for the season, having won seven out of eight games played, therefore are straight into finals in September.

Under 14s

As the weather turned from bad to worse, the Under 14s knew this was a must win game to make finals. Coach Frank Licciardi had his team all fired up. It was a close game with the Phillip Island

Breakers having their chances to score several times throughout the game.

However, it was Drouin that managed to win the game 3-0.

At the end of the game Frank asked each player if they put in 100 per cent, which they all did. You can’t ask for more than that.

Unfortunately, the Under 14s finished fifth on the ladder just missing out on finals.

Under 17 Girls

The girls played second on the ladder Drouin in what was a pretty evenly matched game with the scoreboard not really reflecting the match. Final scores Drouin 7 – Phillip Island 1.

The girls finished fourth on the ladder so will be playing top of the ladder Leongatha in the first semi-final.

Under 17s Mixed

The Breakers hosted top of the ladder Drouin Dragons and had a few players still out with injuries.

Therefore, the Under 17s called up two Under 14s players - Michaela Marr and Hamish Farman; Lara Smyth also helped to make up numbers.

Lewis McClaren went in goals and made some good saves, Jacob Liatos, Adam Dean, Jack Middleton and Solo Scarlett linked up well through the midfield.

The team had their chances to score, however Drouin with their bigger bodies were quick to shut down most of the advances.

Half time it was Drouin in the lead 2-0.

Some changes were made as Balian Prendergast donned on the gloves and went into goals, Michaela Marr and Jack Middleton were strong in defence, Jacob Liatos continued to make good runs through the midfield with Adam Dean and Solo Scarlett putting pressure on the Drouin defence.

The Breakers were defeated by Drouin 8-0 in their worst loss for the season.

The team have managed to finish third on the ladder so will be playing Leongatha in the second semi-final, hopefully will get players back from injuries and meet them at full strength.

Best: Adam Dean, Solo Scarlett, Jacob Liatos and Jack Middleton.

Men’s Reserves

With the rain not giving up all day the reserves played on a pitch that closely resembled an aquatic centre. There were a few players out, and young Jacob Liatos stepped up to help with numbers.

With extremely wet conditions the ball was not doing what it should have as passes pulled up short.

It was Drouin that played the conditions better, scoring two goals to zero in the first half, whilst the Breakers couldn’t capitalise on shots taken. The play throughout the game was evenly matched, final scores Drouin 3 – Phillip Island 0.

With the Bye next week, Men’s Reserves will finish second or third on the ladder, therefore will be playing the second semi-final.

Senior Women

Island hosted Drouin Dragons. The ladies needed to win to consolidate third spot on the ladder.

It was a waterlogged, heavy pitch, quite unusual for Newhaven Park and a very wet, windy and cold day. There were lots of shivering and cold fingers.

Island keeper Gloria made some great saves to prevent Dragons from scoring.

Island scored first with a long and loping ball from Ailish getting over the top of the defence and Kelly ran on to strike it low and hard into the bottom left for a nice goal.

The girls celebrated in style; Dragons equalised not along after for 1-1.

Second half the Dragons got another goal to go up 2-1.

The Breakers worked hard to equalise, but the very physical Dragons were heavily fouling which kept stopping the Breakers momentum through midfield.

The Breakers did make some opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net again today.

Amanda refused to let her opponent – Drouin’s centre forward - get a look at goals, marking her tightly all game, not letting her turn and winning the ball back for the island.

It was typical of Amanda's hard work and selfless effort for her team, applied all season long.

The Dragons were fiercely determined for the victory and held on for a strong win against the Breakers.

It was great contest, very hard work on the heavy pitch and against the very physical opposition and a brave effort from all of the Breaker girls to not give up.

This was the last game of the regular season for the Breaker girls who finished second on ladder earning a spot in the finals.

A great effort for a very young team also considering the difficulties earlier in the season with Covid causing player outages.

The Island will most likely play Drouin again in their next match – a semi-final to be held at Trafalgar on September 11.

This will be a massive game on a fantastic ground – not to be missed for spectators.

Final score: Dragons defeated Breakers 2-1.

Goals: Kelly-1. Best on: Amanda, Gloria, Coco and Alyssa.

Senior Men

The seniors took on Drouin and knew it was going to be a hard game with Drouin needing the three points, the rain was relentless and didn’t give up all day.

This made the pitch very wet, so it was going to be a game of rolling up the sleeves and getting stuck into it, to get the win.

It was the Breakers that had the early chances with Nathan Cleeland going close on two occasions.

Against the run of play it was Drouin that scored. After 20 minutes of play the Breakers started to get control of the game again, and after a nice through ball it was Callum Chisolm who as cool as a cucumber slotted the ball into the back of the net for 1–1 at half time.

The Breakers came out in the second half and controlled the game from there. After five minutes Matt Thornborrow ran towards goal giving the Keeper no chance making it 2-1.

After 30 minutes it was Drouin that had a great scoring chance with their Striker hitting the post and the Island Breakers clearing the ball.

The Breakers finally got another goal with a bad clearance, the ball fell to Cameron Boulton who hit it past the Keeper for a 3-1 score and to seal the game.

This was not the result Drouin wanted. Well done to every Island player putting in a brave performance in tough conditions.

This was their last fixtured game for the season, and if the ladder stays the same with one more round to go, the Phillip Island Breakers will finish on top, if not second leading into the finals.
Best on Ground – Cameron Boulton.

Finals are nearing and Phillip Island Breakers Soccer Club have six out of eight competitive teams through to finals.

1st semi-final 1 v 4 will be on Sunday, September 4 held at Trafalgar.

2nd semi-final 2 v 3 will be on Sunday, September 11 held at Drouin.

Grand Final will be on Sunday, September 18 held at Newhaven.
