Bring your home back to life

Across Phillip Island and Bass Coast, many homes built in earlier decades are full of character but often need thoughtful updates to bring them back to life.
For local tradesman Nick Humphrey, the focus of Bear & Wood Australia is simple: helping homeowners improve and refresh the spaces they already live in.
Nick is a qualified joiner by trade, with years of experience across carpentry, concreting and landscaping.
That mix of skills has shaped the approach behind Bear & Wood Australia, where practical building knowledge meets a strong appreciation for natural materials, particularly timber.
Rather than building new homes, Bear & Wood Australia focuses on improving existing ones.
Through renovations, outdoor living spaces and custom timber work, Nick works with homeowners to add character, function and warmth to homes that simply need a fresh chapter.
Much of Nick’s work centres around custom timber features and outdoor living spaces. From decks and pergolas to handcrafted furniture, barn doors and statement timber pieces, each project reflects the warmth and character that natural timber brings to a home.
“Timber has a character that you just don’t get with many other materials,” Nick explains.
“Every piece is different. When it’s used properly it adds warmth, strength and a natural feel to a space.”
Bear & Wood Australia works across Phillip Island and the wider Bass Coast region, helping homeowners improve both the inside and outside of their properties.
Projects range from outdoor entertaining areas and landscaping features through to custom cabinetry, joinery and carefully considered home improvements, including kitchen and bathroom renovations.
Nick also brings extensive experience renovating older homes, particularly the distinctive houses built throughout the 1970s and 1980s across the region.
Updating these homes often requires patience, creativity and attention to detail while still respecting the character of the original build.
Kitchens and bathrooms are often at the heart of these renovations, where thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship can transform the way a home is used.
Alongside larger projects, Bear & Wood Australia is also known for handcrafted timber pieces made from locally sourced hardwood.
Custom tables, feature joinery and sliding barn doors have become a signature part of the business, blending craftsmanship with practical design.
Nick believes one of the most important parts of any project is communication with clients from the beginning.
Clear planning, honest advice and transparency help ensure that each finished result meets expectations.
As a local family man with four daughters, Nick spends most of his spare time outdoors with family and friends.
Whether it’s camping, caravan trips or getting out on the water, he’s always keen for the next adventure, even if it means discovering yet another place where the fish aren’t biting.
Looking ahead, Bear & Wood Australia will continue focusing on the same values that built the business in the first place: quality craftsmanship, thoughtful design and genuine pride in the work being done.*
For Nick, the goal remains straightforward.
“Build it properly, build it to last, and build something people are proud to live in.”
