Ocean Reach Brewing in Cowes took home a trophy for their Journey Home Black IPA at the prestigious Australian International Beer Awards last month.

Journey Home won the in the best amber/dark ale category, competing against the best beers in the world.

Ocean Reach also won a gold medal for their Pale, and their IPA, Porter and The Ninch Hazy TIPA received a silver medal.

This is the second time the family-owned business has entered the prestigious competition, with this year being its most successful yet.

“We are thrilled to make the Journey Home to Phillip Island with a trophy along with gold and silver medals. It really confirms that all the hard work is paying off and our products are reaching that gold standard,” said owner Alex Bismire.

Journey Home Black IPA is a collaboration beer with Hops to Home, brewed and distributed nationwide to their April craft beer club.

“This Black IPA is inky in colour, with the drinkability of a nice hoppy West Coast IPA,” said Ocean Reach’s head brewer and owner, Simon Bismire.

“Journey Home embodies bright citrus and earthy notes both in aromas and flavours yet there’s subtle chocolate and coffee notes thanks to the roasted wheat malt.”

Journey Home also made its way to some venues and bottle shops throughout Phillip Island.

“We’re continuously seeking ways to improve our methods and strive to deliver the absolute best in craft beer experiences,” said Simon.

This year celebrating 29 years, the Australian International Beer Awards conducted by Melbourne Royal, are the world’s largest annual beer competition judging both packaged and draught beer.

Around 60 industry experts assessed more than 2600 entries across five days in May, with beers received from Australia and around the world.
