Car explodes in Cowes street

A BMW has exploded in front of witnesses on Church Street, Cowes, this afternoon.

A Cowes resident was driving west on Church Street at about 1.10pm when he said he saw black smoke coming from the car, parked outside the Church Street general store.

“But then it exploded as I drove past. It was pretty hot,” the witness said. “It was fully ablaze.”

He said he didn’t believe anyone was in the car at the time of the explosion and he didn’t see anyone nearby impacted.

Church Street was blocked to traffic by fire trucks.
