Tracing Captain Cleeland’s birthplace

Phillip Island residents Mike and Pip Cleeland recently visited Kilkeel, in Northern Ireland exploring the birthplace of Mike’s great grandfather Captain John Cleeland.

Captain Cleeland left Ireland for Australia as a 14-year-old boy in 1840, eventually settling on Phillip Island where he built Woolamai House and went on to win the Melbourne Cup of 1875, with locally born thoroughbred Wollomai.
