A Coles delivery truck tore a branch off a Golden Cypress tree in Thompson Avenue last night, attempting to reverse into the supermarket delivery dock.

The tree is outside the Woolworths plaza and a short time before, the area was filled with parked cars.

Fortunately no one was injured when the huge branch came crashing down, however one car was badly damaged.

The car owner told The Advertiser the branch smashed the back window, pulled off the back bumper bar and cracked the back lights. He said the police helped him re-attach his bumper bar and let him drive the car home, but he believed the car was not roadworthy.

He is currently waiting on his insurance company to assess the damage.

The incident happened between 6pm - 7pm last night.

Police were on site immediately, as a highway patrol team was driving down Thompson Avenue at the time.

SES volunteers arrived quickly to clear the debris off the road and help cut free the car.

More details to come.
