Knitters needed for toy penguins
2 min read

The Penguin Foundation has put out the call for hand knitted jumpers for 10,000 plush toy penguins, to help raise funds for the Foundation.

The Penguin Foundation and Phillip Island Nature Parks “Knits for Nature” program has been hugely successful for over 20 years. Generous knitters and groups from all around the world answered the call to knit jumpers for little penguins to save their lives in the event of oil spills.

The Nature Parks rehabilitation centre is well stocked with jumpers in the unfortunate event of an oil spill, and they thanked the hundreds and thousands of people who contributed their expert knitting skills to provide these life-saving garments for the colony of 40,000 little penguins living on Phillip Island.

Now the knitting has taken a different turn.

In order to continue to raise vital funds to support the Penguin Foundation, the call has gone out for themed jumpers, which can be sold on plush penguin toys in the Nature Parks retail stores (these raise funds that go directly to penguin and wildlife rehabilitation plus research but are not worn by actual penguins).

“Christmas colours are popular, as are football-themed jumpers and countries of the world flag colours,” a Nature Parks spokesperson said.

“They can be knitted to the same pattern available at penguinfoundation.org.au/get-involved/penguin-jumpers.

“Any style that is a bit eye catching, stripey or themed would be wonderful as they are very attractive souvenirs for people visiting in-store and they raise vital funds for the not-for-profit Penguin Foundation.”

As the jumpers are not for use on animals, the need for pure wool is gone – acrylic is fine and the requirements for no buttons and embellishments is no more.

“We invite you to have some fun! Buttons, bow ties and bling are all encouraged!”

Please send or deliver your little penguin jumpers to: Penguin Foundation: Shop 4, 154/156 Thompson Avenue, Cowes VIC 3922.

The Penguin Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that raises funds to protect and enhance Phillip Island’s natural environment through research, conservation and education programs carried out by Phillip Island Nature Parks. By adopting a penguin or donating to the Penguin Foundation you are directly contributing to important research, conservation, and education programs as well as wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
