A recent Winter Clothing Donation Drive led by OBrien Real Estate has drawn a heartwarming response from the local community, with hundreds of quality items collected to assist those most vulnerable during the colder months.
The OBrien Real Estate team was overwhelmed by the public’s generosity and put considerable thought into finding the right organisation to receive the donations.
After speaking with several local community groups, the team found a strong alignment with the mission and values of the Bass Coast Winter Shelter, a volunteer-led initiative gearing up to provide emergency winter accommodation to people experiencing homelessness across the region.
Planning to operate three nights a week from June through August, the shelter will offer more than just a warm bed – it will provide dignity, care, and a safe environment for those doing it tough.
However, during initial conversations between Bec Becker from OBrien Real Estate and Bass Coast Winter Shelter’s project coordinator, Wendy Elson, an unexpected challenge emerged. While the shelter was grateful for the offer, they explained they simply didn’t have the storage capacity to take in all of the donations.
“Determined to find a solution, I discussed the hurdle with our Director, Jodie Hanssen, and it was agreed that OBrien Real Estate would donate the use of one of our own storage facilities to support the shelter in managing stock throughout the winter season,” explained Mrs Becker.
Chair of the Bass Coast Winter Shelter Committee, David Rooks, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration, highlighting the serendipitous alignment between the two organisations.
He noted that it was a perfect example of community at its best – two independent local entities coming together with a shared purpose.
Mrs Becker recently met with Mr Rooks to discuss the alignment of their efforts, with OBrien Real Estate committed to further supporting and growing the partnership in the months and years ahead.
“We’re excited to be part of such a meaningful community initiative,” Ms Hanssen added.
“It’s more than a one-time gesture – we’re committed to supporting the shelter wherever we can, now and into the future.”

Biggest Morning Tea
Building on its recent community outreach, OBrien Real Estate is also inviting locals to come together for another cause close to many hearts.
On Tuesday May 20, from 10am to 12pm, the team will host a Biggest Morning Tea outside their Cowes Sales Office (54 Thompson Avenue, Cowes), raising vital funds for the Cancer Council.
"Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way - whether personally or through a loved one, we want to bring the community together to raise funds and offer support in a meaningful and positive way," is the message being shared from the team.
Attendees can enjoy sweet treats, light refreshments, and a range of mini games to win prizes generously donated by local businesses including Ocean Reach Brewery, Flowers of Phillip Island, Phillip Island Tenpin Bowling, Ember & Oak, Bang Bang, and more.
These sweet treats and prize opportunities will be on offer in exchange for a gold coin donation, all of which will go to the worthy cause. Furry friends and kids are most welcome to attend the day as well.
In addition to the fundraising from the morning tea, OBrien Real Estate will be donating $20 to the Cancer Council for every appraisal booked on the day - whether it be for Sales, Permanent, or Holiday Rentals.
"These are no-obligation appraisals, but they can have a real impact," Ms Hanssen said.
"It's a simple way to support a great cause while gaining insight into your property's market value - now or for the future."
For those unable to attend in person, donations can still be made online by simply scanning the QR code and following the prompts to make your donation. Alternatively, if you wish to make a cash donation, you can stop into OBrien's Cowes, San Remo, or Wonthaggi office, as all have donation jars readily available to accept these donations.
"Every dollar counts, together, we hope to make a meaningful contribution to cancer research and support services - and we'd love to see as many people as possible join us on the day."
