UPDATE: May 2, 5.50pm: Appearance has been cancelled. We will advise rescheduled date asap.
Country Press NSW president and Country Press Australia Board Member Lucie Peart is scheduled to appear on The Drum tonight (May 2) to talk about the state of the newspaper industry from a regional perspective.
The Drum is on from 6pm AEST on ABC iview and ABC TV.
Peter Kennedy, Executive Officer at Victorian Country Press Association said in the leadup to the federal budget and at a time when the federal government’s spend in country papers is at an historic low, it was vital to highlight the issues.
"Country Press Australia has been vocal in its fight for a fairer share of advertising revenue to be distributed among regional and rural media outlets, and this is a great opportunity for Lucie to talk from the heart about country papers," Peter said.
Country Press Australia has been campaigning for more federal government recognition of the role papers play in country Australia.
In April, a national report into local news sustainability challenged the perception that print newspapers are dead and called on governments to revise their advertising rules to help local news providers and better target regional and rural communities.
The report, Media Innovation and the Civic Future of Australia’s Country Press, is the culmination of a three-year Australian Research Council project, led by Deakin University, in partnership with Country Press Australia, the nation’s peak local news lobby, and RMIT University.
The report can be found at www.localnewsinnovation.org.
