The state government has announced additional CovidSafe measures for Melbourne in response to the growing number of cases in the City of Whittlesea outbreak.

The total number of cases is now at nine.

From 6pm today (Tuesday May 25), within Metropolitan Melbourne  the following restrictions apply:

  • Private gatherings in the home limited to five per day
  • Public gatherings limited to 30 people
  • Face masks to be worn indoors, unless exemptions apply. This applies to everyone aged 12 years and over and includes indoor workplaces and secondary schools

Victorians who live in Greater Melbourne and need to travel to regional Victoria can still do so however, the restrictions travel with them.

For example, if someone from metropolitan Melbourne visits a regional area, they must not have more than five visitors to their home in that day. If they attend a public gathering outside of Greater Melbourne, it must not be bigger than 30 people.

Victorians visiting regional Victoria from Melbourne will also need to wear a face mask when indoors even when outside of metropolitan Melbourne, unless an exemption applies.

Due to the current circumstances, the government has paused on the move to remove the density quotient in outdoor spaces and venues to a maximum of 200 people in spaces smaller than 400 sqm. Timing for this easing will be reassessed when public health advice indicates it is appropriate to do so.

All eligible Victorians are also urged to get vaccinated as soon as possible. Appointments are available at sites across the state and at participating GP clinics. Check your eligibility and your nearest site now.

The Department is publishing expected wait times at testing sites as well as updated information about locations and hours of operation at: www.coronavirus.vic.gov.au/where-get-tested-covid-19.
