Gippsland Regional Public Health Unit (GRPHU) has urged people to get their eligible children vaccinated against Covid.

In a recent newsletter, the health team stressed that it was not true that children who had previously had Covid did not need to be vaccinated.

“Children who previously were infected with COVID-19 can and do get infected again. Getting vaccinated boosts any natural immunity that may have developed in those previously infected,” the newsletter stated.

They also said children who turn 12 in the next year should not wait until they can get the adolescent dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“The dose approved for children 5 to 11 makes just as much antibody and protects just as well in this age group as it does in those who are older who get the adolescent and adult dose.

“Waiting until later leaves the child unvaccinated and unprotected.”
