Bumper Crop at OLSS
1 min read

Everyone at Our Lady Star of the Sea primary school has been buzzing with excitement over the past couple weeks as the gardens on the school grounds provide students with a plentiful supply of fruit and vegetables.

"During Term Four last year students from Foundation through to Grade Six all contributed to planning, planting, watering and weeding the garden," explained Principal Catherine Blackford.

"While the lettuce and beetroot were already harvested and enjoyed last year, the students returned to school after the summer holidays to a bumper crop of strawberries, tomatoes, pumpkin, capsicum, corn and hundreds of carrots!

"Plus, sunflower seeds were strategically planted by the Level 1/2 students, so the seeds would grow and beautiful tall sunflowers would bloom in time to warmly welcome the preps on their first day of school."

The bumper crop has been enjoyed throughout the school and the Level 3/4 students were the lucky class to create 'Traffic Light Fritters' using the corn, tomatoes, carrots and capsicum straight from the garden.

"Several families have commented that our students are now cooking the fritters at home with their families."

As OLSS students are organic farmers, any produce that has been damaged is 'dissected' in class, giving students the opportunity to learn about seeds, lifecycles and the special features of plants that help them survive.

"The staff and student at OLSS are very excited and proud about our garden and would like to extend an invitation to the community to visit," said Mrs Blackford.

"Every day is open day at OLSS so give the school a call today to arrange a tour with one of our keen gardeners and Grade 6 School Leaders."
