The first of its kind in any Victorian school, Newhaven College's Surfing Academy certainly provides a truly unique and exciting opportunity for students.
The College said connecting to Phillip Island's local environment adds to students' holistic education.
Utilising the stunning surf coast, students are offered the chance to dive deep into coastal learnings, including kayaking, surf lessons, water-safe education and beach play for younger students.
Retiring in 2023, educator Andy Neal spent the past 25 years teaching Physical Education, Outdoor Education and Health at Newhaven College.
The curriculum allowed for his passion for surfing to come to the fore.
Andy spearheaded the creation of the College's Surfing Academy in 2012. New to the College in 2023, Ben Clarke will be taking on the management of the Academy with an excellent pedigree in Outdoor Education.
During 2023, the College's Performance Squad continued to train together after school under the tutelage of local shaper, coach and former WCT Professional, Glyndyn Ringrose.
"The College has a young, enthusiastic and growing bunch of 'groms' who are incredibly lucky to have someone of Glyndyn's calibre and experience guiding their progress," a spokesperson said.
The school said surfing as an elective in the College's timetabled 'SM' (Sport & Music) Program continues to be much sought after by student surfers, running at Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels through Terms 1, 2 and 4.
"The Surf students travel all around Phillip Island expanding their experience in different locations and conditions.
"The Surfing Academy is just one area of exceptional outdoor education at Newhaven College.
"The Tennis Academy, coached by Paul Rowbottom of IMT Coaching has been hugely successful over the years.
"New in 2024 the much-anticipated Mountain Biking (MTB) Academy will commence with many students thrilled to participate."
