Newhaven College’s thriving music program
4 min read

Newhaven College's unique tradition of nurturing the musical soul of each student has been celebrated during Term 2 with musical productions, concerts and performances.

The College believes stars of the future are on campus right now, learning their artistry while sharing their talents with other students, parents and the whole community.

With ongoing tuition from the College’s formidable music teachers and tutors, Newhaven College music students are supported to reach their highest potential. Each student is encouraged to discover their unique expression of music while developing confidence, ease, excellence and enjoyment each step of the way.

Term 2 started off with a bang with four exceptional performances of “Shrek - The Musical” starring some of the most talented singers in our region, plus live music played by the College Orchestra.

The packed audiences of family, friends, fellow students and the local community gave the show rave reviews.

In the last few weeks of term, music continued to permeate through all three sub-schools at Newhaven College.

During Middle School assembly, fellow students were treated to a stunning performance of “March Forward” by Kordelia Kossena on the cello. Plus, The Ice Breakers five-piece band performed “Good in Goodbye” by Madison Beer. The musicians, Riley Lawrence (drums), Finn McLean (keyboards), River Henderson (guitar) and the vocals of Jemilla Prideaux and Madison Manallack were world class and to be applauded!

On the evening of June 14, The Westernport Hotel in San Remo became an underage rock venue allowing Newhaven College’s VET Music second year students to perform covers and original songs.

For some students this was their first time performing in a venue outside the College. It really was a special evening with all students rising to the occasion and performing wonderfully.

School Principal Tony Corr said the skills and attitudes that are cultivated and brought out in these young people through the College’s Music program was a beautiful thing to see on stage and was applauded by the audience that night.

He praised all those involved.

“VET Music Concert at the Westernport Hotel was a wonderful night of diverse bands – from jazz, contemporary and rock – doing unique interpretations of existing numbers as well as original pieces.

It was great to have parents and friends back in full attendance and enjoying the talent on display.”

Last week the Year 5 and 6 students presented a showcase of their semester's work in the Band Program.

Matt Goss, Director of Music, recognises that at-home rehearsals may not reflect how well the band can play when they perform together.

“Some dedicated work results in their playing really starting to blossom,” he said.

The College is looking forward to the Spring Concert coming up on September 10.

Tuesday lunchtime played host to the 1st Year VCE VET Music class ensemble performance and event management units.

To wrap up a magical term of music, the Junior School parents were treated to a strings performance last Tuesday afternoon by the Year 3 and 4 students who experience weekly violin and cello tuition as part of their music curriculum.

The College has been particularly excited to be able to invite parents along as supportive and appreciative audiences again. More opportunities will arise for parents to attend productions on campus with the Performing Arts Wing due to open in Term 3.

“Newhaven College music offers every student wonderful opportunities to play, practice and perform in a brand new state of the art music facility,” Principal Tony Corr said.

“With a range of ensembles, bands and choirs across the College, Newhaven’s vibrant music program inspires a love of music in students of all ages and abilities.”

In light of this, new Music Scholarships for 2023 have been announced.

Newhaven College is looking to award Music Scholarships to talented, passionate and dedicated students of music who demonstrate strong musical potential. The offer is for students entering Newhaven College at Years 5, 7, 9 and 11 in 2023.
