A Japanese emperor in Cowes
1 min read

Covid restrictions permitting, Singularity choir returns to St John's, Cowes at 2pm on June 20 with a concert version of "The Mikado", a Gilbert and Sullivan classic.

Between the merry, mirthful, musical numbers, a narrator guides the audience through the plot, which has at its core a love story between wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo and school girl Yum-Yum.
Unfortunately The Mikado, the emperor, has decreed flirting to be a capital crime, which makes any love story rather difficult to begin, let alone complete.

In response, the gentlemen of Titipu, the town in which the action takes place, appoint Ko-Ko, who is already condemned for flirting, as the Lord High Executioner. Brilliant! No executions can be carried out until he first cuts off his own head.

Of course the plot thickens considerably before it eventually resolves as Singularity, in lavish attire, enthusiastically weave the threads together with vibrant voices and ridiculous drama.
Tickets are $15 for adults, and $5 for children under 14. For enquiries, contact Lyn Francis on 5952 5723.

Proceeds from the concert go to Rubaga Youth Development Association, Uganda.

“The Mikado” – Sunday, June 20, 2pm, St. John's Uniting Church, Chapel Street, Cowes.
