Over the Easter weekend the Artists Society Phillip Island Region (ASPIR) held the first of its annual exhibitions.
Featuring over 200 works submitted by ASPIR members it proved to be a wonderfully bright, eclectic and interesting show.
The judge, Melbourne artist and teacher, Jo Reitze, complimented the committee and members on the presentation of exhibits and remarked on the magnificent venue in the Newhaven College Arts Centre foyer.
Jo, after much deliberation, not an easy task, announced the following awards.
Painting: Winner – Karen Preston with “Tidal Reflections”; Highly Commended – Marian Quigley.
Other Medium: Winner – Bruce Wearne with “Twin Box set”; Highly Commended – Gay Mosby.
Textile Art: Winner – Margaret Knight with “Connections”; Highly Commended – Norma Stack-Robinson.
Best In Show was awarded to Heather Towns for her beautifully stylised still life “Fun with Nasturtiums”.
Jo Reitze also commended five other artists for their work: Sian Adnam, Ajanta Judd, Jillian Mitchell, Pauline Grotto and Karen Allen.
A new award was offered this year by Clay & Co for Best Body of Work which gives an artist a week’s exhibition at Clay & Co Studio Gallery.
Karen Morton, judge and sponsor, selected a delighted Karen Preston.
Nearly 1000 visitors attended the exhibition over the four days and most placed a vote for their favourite piece for the People’s Choice Award. This was won by Heather Towns for her work “Aussie Combo”.
To present an exhibition of such quality takes a huge amount of work behind the scenes, not only by the ASPIR Committee, but by members and their families. Congratulations to them all.
“Members fully appreciate the opportunity such events give them to show and share their creativity, to inspire and to be inspired,” said ASPIR’s Miranda Sage.
“However none of this would come together without the generous support of our sponsors. Please read our Thank You advertisement. We commend these businesses and people to you.”
ASPIR will now be working towards the Cup Weekend event.
