Get in sync with The Syncopators

The Phillip Island Jazz Club presents The Syncopators this Sunday, October 15.

The band is playing from 2pm – 4.30pm at the Phillip Island Bowling Club in Cowes.

With six of the finest musicians in Australia, without doubt they are considered to be one of the best show bands in the country.

“If you only see one group for 2023 you will leave amazed at their organisation and control,” said a spokesperson for the Jazz Club.

The members of the group are Chris Ludowyk – leader and trombone, Peter Gaudion on trumpet and vocals, Richard Miller on reeds, James Clark on bass, Steven Grant on keyboards and Rod Gilbert on drums.

Originally known as The Society Syncopators and more recently The Syncopators, the group has made numerous CDs, most of which will be on sale on the day.

Formed in 1984, Chris Ludowyk handpicked the cream of Melbourne’s jazz talent to form the band.

With their versatility (the guitarist plays banjo, the bassist plays tuba, the clarinettist plays alto and tenor sax and the trombonist plays bass), they cover a wide range of styles and material.

The vocal harmonising talent of the front-line also lends itself to the performance of popular jazz material a la Mills Brothers and Boswell Sisters.

Although their repertoire stems from the roots of traditional jazz, they play everything from classic jazz through mainstream to pre-rock rhythm and blues.

The Syncopators are recognised as one of the leading classic/mainstream/jazz groups in Australia by critics and jazz fans alike.

Arguably they are regarded as the leaders in their field in the world. This, plus their superb musicianship, stage presence and keen sense of humour invariable draws standing ovations worldwide.

The late Graeme Bell was a fan of the group and in his words they are “easily one of the top show jazz bands in Australia today”.

“This is a must see and we anticipate that seats will be at a premium so don’t miss out, please book early and make payment in advance.”

Venue is Phillip Island Bowling Club, 40 Dunsmore Road, Cowes commencing at 2pm. Tickets are $20 for members and $25 for visitors.
