Island’s shoreline on display
1 min read

Cape Woolamai artist and print maker Lindy Yeates' solo exhibition My Island Home opens at the Berninneit Art Gallery on April 13.

The exhibition, which runs through until May 26 features Lindy's exquisite drawings of the island's shoreline.

"I have been drawing the shoreline of the island from the lowtide mark for about four years now (since lockdown)," Lindy explained.

My Island Home showcases panoramic originals that each measure about 1.2m in length, plus large format wallpaper, fabric banners and interior design items, all for purchase.

The drawings are all made en plein air (no photos or studio time).

"I began drawing the coast of Phillip Island, Millowl, during lockdown when we could only travel 5kms from home on limited time," Lindy said.

"What began as an escape, quickly became an exercise in mindfulness; an arts practice that I continue today.

"Sitting at the low tide mark, contemplating the shoreline, surrounded by the teeming diversity of this unique natural habitat, I become intimately aware of the beauty and vulnerability of My Island Home; haven to millions of migrating shorebirds; sanctuary for an extraordinary collection of flora and fauna that also call Millowl home.

"As sea levels rise and climate changes, never has the importance of our thoughtful stewardship been more imperative."

The exhibition includes prints of the shorebirds of the island in migration and an artist's talk.

There will be a print-with-the-artist session on May 4.

A map of the island will be supplied to visitors who can take a drive around the island to locate where each of the drawings was made.
