Exhibition a showcase for young local artists
An exhibition at Clay and Co, featuring two young local artists, Jari Cooper and Anna Neil opens this week.
An exhibition at Clay and Co in Cowes, featuring two young local artists, Jari Cooper and Anna Neil opens this week and runs from May 13 – 17.
The exhibition will showcase stone and timber sculptures, stone bowls and paintings, and will be officially opened by Phillis Papps on Friday, May 12.
Both artists have a connection to the Sunderland Bay Foam Street Studio.
Jari has been making sculptures and learning paintings there for the past two years, while Anna is associated with artists from the studio.
Now in his early twenties, Jari started making art as a teenager and works in wood, stone, stainless steel and titanium, specialising in stone carving.
“His works take on a persona of individuality that can’t be seen elsewhere,” said Laurie Miller from Foam Street Studio.
“The pieces develop a character of their own that emanates a strong emotion, and cause the viewer to stop and contemplate each piece, questioning the flow and form of the various materials used.
“The timber works express humour, and a longing, while others express a deep contemplation,” Laurie said.
“This exhibition is of an artist’s ability to take a seemingly innocuous material and turn it into something of interest and beauty.
“The characters are there, from torsos to figures and busts, each one is individual.”
Jari designs and builds water features comprising hand crafted individual stones to hold water. Installations that create harmony and help edge one closer to relaxation.
Anna Neil

Anna grew up spending equal periods of time in England and Australia.
She started drawing as a child, influenced by her grandmother’s paintings and her parents taste in architecture and fine art.
Anna paints in oil, preferring the richness that oil can produce on canvas.
Her pallet is extremely well balanced, delicate, sophisticated hues that can only be found in a temperate climate.
She is currently working on a collection of works in oil on cedar retained from the Victorian era, pieces of cedar over 100 years old.
Anna also works in watercolour and acrylic paint.
“Anna’s works are painted with confidence and are eminently collectable; you will see, these are the works of a talented artist well worth following,” said Laurie.
The exhibition at Clay and Co, 4 Shorland Way, Cowes, runs from May 13 – 17.
