Newhaven Primary School has formally launched its Friends of Newhaven Primary program.

The program is part of a range of new initiatives to help raise money for the school.

The launch took place at the new community market on Saturday, another fundraising venture for the school.

On hand to launch the new Friends of Newhaven program was President of the School Council Andrea Cole and school principal Sharyne Munday, as well as representatives from the local business community and parents, students and friends of the school.

Jennifer Carrol from the school’s fundraising committee said many local businesses attended the launch and became members.

The businesses included Island Shoes, Woolamai Pizza, Woolamai Kebab, Wandering Flames, IGA San Remo, Awaken the Heart Wellness and La Onda.

“Some generously offered a discount throughout the year to all members at the school,” she said.

“It was great to have our local businesses supporting our school and becoming members.”

She said marketgoers were enthusiastic about the new initiative, commenting “how wonderful and simple it is to become a member”.

Friends with benefits

The annual Friends of Newhaven Primary membership fee of $50 makes members eligible for a monthly draw, with a chance to win a prize valued at $100. All prizes will be purchased at a local business.

“Rather than us going to the business community asking for donations, this is a way to support businesses by buying gifts and goods from them,” explained Jennifer.

Members will also be eligible for discounts from select local stores, receive a monthly newsletter and an annual gift.

The committee is hoping to sign up 400 members from the school community and beyond.

“The membership is open to everyone on Phillip Island, San Remo and beyond,” said Jennifer.

“Everyone benefits from being a member and each year we will map out a plan for where the money raised will be used.”

This year, the revenue raised will go toward creating a sensory garden at the school.

If any additional funds are left over, the junior school council committee have a revamp of the school bike shed on their wish list.
