President of the WBSLSC Jason Close (left) has “a friendly rivalry” with friend Andrew Poulton and the pair have raced each other 10 times in the Channel Challenge, with Jason claiming line honours this year.

Winning women Debbi Mahon, Susie Herrington, Bek Fincher and Sarah Smith. Susie and Bek took out second and third place in the Local Veteran Female category, while Debbi and Sarah came first and second respectively in the Local Masters Female categories, and first and third in the Masters Female.

Age is no barrier for these intrepid competitors. Mary Brown (left) declared she was the oldest first time female competitor in the race, with both her and Roz Morris (centre) in their 60s. Race veteran Jenny Merrick is in her 70s and said she’s lost count of how many times she has competed.

It was a perfect autumn day for the running of the rescheduled San Remo Channel Challenge, with competitors and spectators crowding on to the beach and jetty before the start of the race.

Organisers breathed a sigh of relief following the successful staging of the rescheduled Channel Challenge at San Remo last Saturday.
A sunny autumn day with gentle winds certainly brought large numbers of competitors and spectators to San Remo for the late afternoon event.
Organiser Ron Nicholson was thrilled to report a record number of entries to the rescheduled race.
