“Greener Pastures”, a moving film that presents a glimpse into settlement experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) community members was launched across Gippsland during Cultural Diversity Week 2022.
The film screening at Wonthaggi (the last of four screenings across Gippsland) was attended by around 80 community members.
Each of the film screenings was followed by a panel discussion with engaging conversations about experiences of settling in Gippsland as a migrant or refugee.
A recurring theme across all events was what can be done to help people from migrant and refugee backgrounds feel more welcome in Gippsland.
The film itself highlights the power of simple acts such as saying hello to make new arrivals feel welcomed in the community. Following the film, the audience was encouraged to say hi, be curious and take small acts of kindness.
A number of people in the auditorium expressed the need to show this short film at various platforms, including schools and community groups for further reach.

At the end of each event, attendees of the film were asked to describe the film in three words.
Most people said they found the event thought-provoking, informative and inspiring.
It was also noted that sharing stories of people with lived experience can be a powerful tool to relate to one another, which in turn will foster community harmony, celebrate diversity and facilitate inclusion.
“Latrobe Community Health Services, together with the film producers and the people who feature in the film, are so proud to have shared this thought-provoking film with Gippsland community members,” said spokesperson Goshu Tefera.
“Thank you to everyone for coming along, and please get in touch if you’d like to find out how you can view Greener Pastures.”
Organisers of the Wonthaggi event acknowledged the support of Bass Coast Shire Council.
