Groms are back
To launch the new Supergroms season, PIBC is holding a Pre-Season Family info night’ on Thursday October 19.
The Phillip Island Boardriders Club (PIBC) is about to launch their 2023/2024 Supergroms Season with a brand new initiative from sub-committee members Deb Leonard, Alisha Hill, Steven Lock and Melanie Wright.
“This year, we’re starting the season with a Pre-Season Family info night.
“It’s something that will really add a lot of value to the program, and provide parents with some great advice before heading into the surf,” says parent and committee member, Alisha.
The information evening will be held two days before the season starts, at the PIBC Clubhouse (76 Veterans Drive, Newhaven) on Thursday October 19 from 5.30pm – 7.30pm.
It will give families a chance to meet each other, see the clubhouse, and find out all about the club and Supergroms program.
Attendance is just a gold coin donation, which will help keep events like this running in the future.
Special guests from the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club (WBSLSC) will be presenting some important information on water safety, and members of the Phillip Island Boardriders Club will be sharing some expert tips on how to help groms catch their first waves, while giving parents and carers the confidence to support them in the water.
There will also be question and answer time, as well as a free sausage sizzle for all attendees.
Program

The PIBC Supergroms program runs annually from October to March and kicks off with the first surfing event at 9am on Saturday October 21.
PIBC member and Supergroms Co-ordinator Deb, is passionate about the program after starting on the Committee three years ago.
“The program is a fantastic way for kids of all abilities to come together, learn new skills, make new friends and get frothed on being in the ocean,” she said.
“The no-pressure atmosphere allows kids to build their confidence in the water and enjoy the sport, while the presentation nights bring families together for a relaxed, social evening where kids can play, awards are given, a free bbq is provided, and parents can enjoy a chat.”
The Phillip Island Boardriders Club, established in 1963, lays claim to the oldest continuously running surfing club in Australia. They run their own events across several different formats, age divisions and locations, as well as competing in state and national club events.
“Supergroms is such a vital part of our club and community – in fact, many of our current senior and open surfers at PIBC started in the Supergroms program,” said Alisha.
“It’s the first step in getting the kids of Phillip Island comfortable in the water and having fun, while building lifelong friendships, and a sense of belonging within the Phillip Island Boardriders Club.”
