Groms battle the weekend waves — Phillip Island’s Poppy Corbett (back left) finished fourth in the Rip Curl Gromsearch 16 and Under Girls division on the weekend.

Phillip Island surfer Poppy Corbett finished fourth in the 16 and Under Girls division of the Rip Curl Gromsearch at Jan Juc on the weekend.

The event was dominated by Surf Coast Groms who won five of the six divisions.

In small clean waves, the best 16 and Under surfers from around the state kicked off the new competitive season with an incredible display of innovative surfing.

Ethan Huxtable (Jan Juc) won the 16 and Under Boys final, while Emily McGettigan (Torquay) won the girls’ event.

14 and Under was won by Isla Huppatz (girls) and Willis Droomer (boys), with Sophie Wilkinson and Remy Filer taking out the 12 and Under events.

The top three from each division will progress to the National Final to be held at URBNSURF Wave Pool in Melbourne next year.
