Last month, the students at Newhaven Primary School celebrated Harmony Day and Bullying No Way Day.
Prep /1 classroom teacher Robyn Smith said the theme of the day was “kindness culture”.
“Everyone at school either dressed in orange or wore “kindness” t shirts.
“One activity we did for the whole school was to write kind messages (for Bullying No Way Day) or everyone belongs (for Harmony Day) and added them to our KIND wall in the playground.”
During the day the students enjoyed a scavenger hunt around the school.
“Families from our school community were asked for special items that represented their country of origin,” said Robyn.

“We had items from Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Canada, Philippines, Vietnam, Denmark, Greece, England, Mauritius, Italy and Indigenous Australia.
“The items were placed around at different points in the school and classes were given maps to find them. At each point, there were cards with information for students to read and discuss.”
Students also created a video.
“I asked students in the yard to show me what a kindness culture looks like,” Robyn explained.
“They acted it out in different scenarios, and I videoed them. Students came up with some fantastic examples, such as sharing, take in turns, helping people out, saying hello in the morning, playing together and letting others join in.”
At lunchtime, the grade 6 students took charge and ran some inclusive games for everyone to join in and enjoy.
There were activities in the gym, on the school oval and on the soccer fields next door.
