Heading for the record books
Entries are only online for this year's Channel Challenge on February 10. Entries close at 5.30pm on Friday, February 9.
This year's San Remo Channel Challenge hopes to set a new record for entries, after the success of the Cape Paterson Aquathon - the first leg of the Bass Coast Series.
The organisers hope to see a record number of over 600 competitors line up by the jetty before they make the channel crossing over to Newhaven on Saturday February 10.
Entries are already more than halfway towards setting a new record of over 635 participants and if the weather forecast is for fine conditions on race day, then the 38th Channel Challenge should see that record eclipsed.
The organisers want to remind all prospective competitors that entries are only to be made online and the cutoff time is 5.30pm on Friday, February 9.
With the high volume of expected entries, the organisers are probably going to also open the race centre for a couple of hours on Friday evening (February 9) at the San Remo Hotel so that competitors can collect their race packs and help ease the congestion on the Saturday morning. Competitors will receive an email notification if that is happening.
The town of San Remo will be busy on Channel Challenge day with the return of both the Foreshore Market run by the San Remo and Phillip Island Rotary club and the Male and Female Tug-Of-War competitions.
Marshalling for the race will be at noon and the first wave of competitors is expected to hit the water at 12.15pm. Presentations will be held on stage at the San Remo Hotel at around 2pm.
The organising committee also wants to remind all competitors that Sunday, February 11 has been set as the backup day if there is any reason to have to postpone the planned Saturday event.
