How the practice of gratitude can make you happier
The practice of being grateful can lift us up and give us that feeling of happiness.
We all want to be happier right? And we are always looking for the next best thing to lift us up and to give us that feeling of happiness.
Well, as I will be diving into happiness more these coming weeks, I want to give you one thing you can start practicing right away, and that is the practice of gratitude!
The practice of being grateful is as old as we humans are and is something we have known since we were born. For example, by saying thank you or learning how to be grateful to others if they give or do something for us. But practicing it on a daily basis ... no, that's not what a lot of us do anymore.
But what if I say that the practice of being grateful can make you happier? That it can let you sleep better, worry less, and in time will even change your brain through all these amazing happy and love hormones that you will create throughout the practice? And the good thing is, you can do it everywhere and it doesn't cost you anything.
Now I just saved you a whole lot of money already, haha! Kidding aside ... where to start?
You could start with telling everyone what you love or like about them (and you definitely should), but let's start small for now.
Get a journal and start writing down all the amazing things you are grateful for. That could be a lot. Trust me, if you get started, it's hard to stop.
What I always like to do is practice gratitude before I go to sleep. Before I go into my sleep meditation, I go through my day, and in my mind I list all the things I am grateful for, like a beautiful playdate with my daughter and friends and seeing her smile, the nice walk with my dogs, or a magical sunrise.
Whatever it is, you can make it your own thing, there are no rules. Do what works for you, writing it down, saying it out loud or in your mind.
Like meditation, doing it daily for even two minutes is better than 20 minutes once a week.
Even the science says if you just start with writing down three things a day you are grateful for, it will increase your happiness, your mental health, and even the way you look at things.
It is not for nothing that I work with my clients on this practice. They sleep better, they start to feel less depressed, it even helped some people to lose weight.
And as the neurotransmitters dopamine and also serotonin increase, we feel more motivated, we start to feel happier, more in control, and our mood will start to stabilise more over time.
Make it your new habit, it is so worth it. Your body and mind will thank you for it!.
And as always let me know what it does for your health, life, and happiness.
