Island Girls suffer first loss of the season
Congratulations to Tess Ricardo for winning the beau Veernon award.

As part of women’s and girls’ football Gather Round the Island girls travelled to Traralgon to take on Drouin. After a two-week break and with a number of players unavailable due to illness and injury the Island girls started the game slowly.

Drouin were on the board early, but the Island girls managed to steady with some great shepherding from Stella Tilley the island girls were able to get on the board.

An unlucky early call to end the quarter from the umpire prevented Beth Grenness from landing a telling blow just before quarter time.

The second quarter saw the Island girls once again under siege but strong defensive efforts from Sadie Davies, Lily Carville and Jasmine (Cuz) Campbell helped to keep the score down.

Without a bench the Island were always going to do it tough. Indi Keady came into the ruck to give our tireless leader Ruby Kent a break and Kyra Carton also rolled into the middle, both proving they were up to the challenge.

Izzy Lynch was working tirelessly up forward with an injured Gisele Smith, Sarah Szymanski and Lerah Schonewille also getting their hands on the ball.

The third quarter saw the Island girls play their best football of the day with Piper Nicolaci and Billie Forrester Goeghegan playing some inspired football on the wings against much bigger opponents.

While Lily (Elbow) Bow and Gemmah Fischer provided plenty of drive across the ground.

Early in the last quarter the island girls had several chances to take the lead, however wayward kicking didn’t help the cause.

Drouin then took their chances and scored to break the Island’s run of play. Scarlette Rees and Tessa Ricardo were once again solid down back and Bethany Grenness was a constant attacking threat, however it just wasn’t enough to take back the lead.
