August 12 next week at the Senior Citizens Club in Lion’s Court in Cowes is set to be a red letter day for members, with the much anticipated 50th birthday celebrations planned twelve months ago, now able to go ahead.
Hopes were dashed this time last year when the Club’s major milestone party had to cancelled because of lockdowns.
But its all smoothing sailing now, with an extra special celebration planned next week for birthday number fifty one.
Highlights of the day include entertainment by the 10 piece Police Scottish Highland Band, and the cutting of a huge cake which is being specially made for the Club by the Phillip Island Bakery.
Club secretary Liza Lee is busy with the Lion’s Club committee planning lots of fun activities, and local businesses, says Liza, have been very generous with donations of goods and vouchers as prizes to be won throughout the afternoon.
Liza said a new committee has just been elected, and the day will also be a chance for members to meet them.
After 11 years at the helm, Alan Droscher has stepped down as president, handing the baton on to Teena Burns.
Alan has done an outstanding job as president over this period, taking the Club forward and opening up the very comfortable and spacious clubrooms for community use, among other things.
He has also been a strong advocate out in the community for a number of causes that affect the seniors population, and in particular since 2011, lobbying strongly for 24/7 emergency care and a community hospital to be established on Phillip Island.
Liza said that the Club is always delighted to welcome new members, and there are a wide range of activities to take part in.
As well as the social activities of indoor bowls, snooker, billiards, and cards, bingo is now played at the Clubrooms on the first Thursday of each month. Ball room dancing is great fun on Monday nights.
Carpet bowls is played weekly. A model train club runs on Sunday afternoon, with train club enthusiasts currently preparing for a September exhibition.
And the Club’s craft and sewing ladies do a great job, turning out wonderful items for sale. The Mecwcare Group now run the Planned Activities Group (PAG) sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the frail and older members of the community
A monthly delicious roast lunch is held on the first Friday of the month for everyone to enjoy together, and Mecwacare provides use of their bus to the Club to ensure those without transport can be picked up and dropped off, and join in the fun.
Liza said that everyone at the Club is looking forward to the August 12 celebration, and that anyone who would like to come is welcome.
Bookings are essential. Cost is $20 for a three course meal and plenty of entertainment including the Police Scottish Highland Band.
