Eurovision fever came to Phillip Island last week when a viral video made by a group of Cowes Primary School friends was liked by Australia’s entrant, singer Jessica Mauboy.

The one minute 36 second video was made on the Cowes front beach by eight grade five friends, who sing “We Got Love”, which is the song sung by Mauboy at Sunday’s Eurovision final in Portugal.

The video had more than 7000 views, including on the SBS Facebook site (which televised the Eurovision competition), and attracted dozens of comments, including one by Mauboy herself on the Advertiser’s Facebook page.

“OMG!!! Amazing,” Jessica wrote of the video, followed by an emoticon love heart.

Cowes resident Serena Cabello organised the shooting of the video, which features her daughter Chilli.

Serena responded to Jessica’s post, saying: “Sending you all our love Jess & GOOD LUCK!! We will be screaming our lungs out for you.”
“Super Eurovision fan Chilli is beside herself!!!”

SBS also featured the video on their Facebook page, posting: “How great is it seeing the next generation of #Eurovision fans? Check out this amazing entry from Phillip Island.”

Serena says the video was made as a competition entry into an SBS competition, with the winner earning a visit by Jessica to their school.
“Really we wanted to show our support for Jess. We both love Eurovision,” Serena says, adding that Chilli had a Eurovision-themed birthday party on Saturday night.

“It’s the biggest party in the world but it’s also an awesome way to learn about European politics and history.”

Serena says Chilli spent hours interpreting the lyrics of “We Got Love” in different languages, using Google translate, with the translations then becoming props in the video.

The video received dozens of comments on the SBS Facebook page, including one from Susan DC who commented: “this is beautiful and it showcases our very best ideals to the world. SBS please remake a music video with this concept of our multicultural children against various landscapes of Australia”.

When the results came in on Friday, our girls were delighted to be told that they were announced as runners up in the competition.
