Anyone walking the Nyora-Wonthaggi Rail Trail in the next few weeks is warned temporary diversions might be in place due to erosion in the area.
Bass Coast Shire Council said it is assessing the impact of a recent landslip that occurred adjacent to the Nyora-Wonthaggi Rail Trail at Kilcunda, following significant sand dune erosion in the area.
"In recent weeks, storms and high tides have caused substantial erosion near the Lionel Rose Carpark," council stated.
"As a result, the beach access stairs were washed away, and access to Kilcunda Surf Beach is now very limited. For community safety, security fencing has been installed to prevent access to the damaged area."
Council has engaged geotechnical engineers Tonkin and Taylor, along with survey contractors Beveridge Williams, to undertake detailed assessments of the slip.
"This work will help determine the extent of the damage, the potential ongoing risks to the shared path, and any mitigation measures required. It will also inform whether a temporary closure or diversion of the rail trail is necessary."
These investigations and surveys are expected to take approximately two weeks.
"Council will keep the community informed of the outcomes and any recommended actions or further works as information becomes available," a spokesperson said.
"We thank community members and visitors for their patience while this important safety assessment is undertaken."
