Night sky watchers were rewarded with a stunning display last week when an aurora lit up the sky.

On November 4, local photographer Nici Cahill from Snapshot Photography captured the spectacle from Cape Woolamai, saying the aurora shone brightly despite the cloud cover.

The Bureau of Meteorology even issued an alert, saying the spectacular skies would be visible from Victoria’s coastline.

The natural light display is caused by particles from the sun, millions of kilometres away interacting with Earth’s magnetic field.

The auroras in this hemisphere are known as the Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis.
