Licence to cull geese numbers plummet on island

The number of Cape Barren geese that were authorised for culling on Phillip Island dropped by nearly three-quarters in 2025, according to newly-released figures from the Conservation Regulator.

Four separate Authority to Control Wildlife permits were issued on the island last year to cull a maximum of 200 Cape Barren geese, down from 741 in 2024. It remains unclear whether the reduction was due to fewer licences being granted, or fewer licences being sought.
