The Rotary Club of Phillip Island and San Remo is investing in the leaders of tomorrow, supporting a series of youth development programs that give young people the confidence, resilience, and leadership skills to shape their future.

These programs are more than just opportunities - they are life-changing experiences that encourage young people to grow in ways that textbooks alone can't teach.

Whether it's mastering teamwork aboard a tall ship, building leadership confidence through personal development workshops, or exploring cutting-edge science and technology, each program opens a unique pathway to discovery.

"We want to give our kids opportunities to grow, learn and shine," said Brian Morris from Rotary's Youth Committee.

"The outcomes have been remarkable. You can see the transformation in their confidence and how they carry that forward into their studies, work, and community involvement."

Adventure and leadership at sea

The new year will set sail with the Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge, a thrilling program for students aged 16 to 18 who are eager for adventure and personal growth.

Over four unforgettable days aboard a working tall ship, participants become part of the crew, learning to navigate, hoist sails, steer the ship, and support one another through the challenges of life at sea.

Participants face new challenges every day, from learning navigation skills to working through night watches, developing courage, and discovering the rewards of collaboration.

Two Melbourne-based voyages are scheduled for January 17-20 and April 11-14, 2026, and the Rotary Club of Phillip Island and San Remo is offering to sponsor one or two local students to take part.

Applications for the January voyage close December 10, 2025.

Developing tomorrow's leaders

For young adults aged 18 to 30, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program is a cornerstone of Rotary's youth investment. This week-long residential experience focuses on developing leadership potential through workshops, guest speakers, group challenges, and self-reflection.

RYLA participants learn essential life skills. It's a program for young people already studying or working who want to take their next steps as community and workplace leaders.

Applications open in April 2026, and the Phillip Island and San Remo Rotary Club will again offer sponsorships. Many RYLA graduates say it's a "life-changing" program that broadens horizons, creates lasting friendships, and instils the confidence to take on leadership roles in all areas of life.

Inspiring the next generation of scientists

For students who dream of making a difference through science and innovation, Rotary supports participation in the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) - a program that connects bright young minds with Australia's leading researchers, universities, and industries.

Held each January in Canberra or Brisbane, the NYSF gives Year 12 students a rare chance to experience cutting-edge science firsthand. Through laboratory visits, industry tours, and university workshops, participants explore pathways in STEM while developing curiosity and critical-thinking skills.

Applications for the 2027 forum open in mid-2026, and the local Rotary Club will sponsor one deserving student to attend.

The Rotary Club of Phillip Island and San Remo believes that empowering young people is one of the most effective ways to build a stronger community. These programs are not just about skills or study - they nurture compassion, collaboration, and confidence, helping young people become active contributors to society.

Parents, schools, and community members are encouraged to help identify students who could benefit from these opportunities. Whether they're looking for adventure, leadership experience, or scientific inspiration, Rotary has a program that can make a lasting difference.
