Cape Woolamai Surf Lifesaving Club has been nominated in the 2023 Community Achievement Awards for Victoria.
The club has been nominated in the Regional Development Victoria leadership and innovation award category for being the “driving force” in their community.
Woolamai Beach SLSC captain Campbell Smart said this past summer season the club had more than 900 active members who completed 14 rescues, 5418 preventative actions, and 92 first aids, with a total beach attendance of 23,685 people.
“Woolamai BSLSC took a big step into its emergency service role this season by providing members and equipment to support the Victorian flood effort,” Campbell said.
“The club also assisted Victoria Police with a night-time search and rescue.”
He said they have also run four special patrol weekends to raise awareness of men's mental health, environmental sustainability, LGBTQIA+ support, and females in leadership.
“The surf lifesaving club has made a major step forward in diversity and inclusion,” he said.
“We are made up of people from many different walks of life, but we all come to save lives on and off the beach.”
Finalists in the awards will be announced in October and winners will be announced at a dinner on December 1 in Melbourne.
All nominees will receive a letter of congratulations and a certificate of encouragement for their nomination.
