Liberal candidate Mary Aldred takes the seat of Monash, after a week of counting by the AEC.
Liberal candidate Mary Aldred has been declared the winner in Monash, after a week of counting by the Australian Electoral Commission.
Aldred led the first preference vote at 32.08 per cent, well clear of nearest rival, Labor’s Tully Fletcher, and after preferences took the seat with 54.31 per cent of the vote.
On her campaign Facebook page, Mary Aldred acknowledged it had been “a long and complicated process” to get a result.
“I understand with my election comes the expectation from day one to deliver locally and take a strong national stand on behalf of the people of Monash. And that’s exactly what I intend to do.
“To the people of Monash: I will work my heart out for you.”
In a statement on the result last night, Tully Fletcher said he had called Mary Aldred to concede the seat.
Up until Monday May 12, Monash was one of only three seats in the entire country where AEC had yet to nominate a leading party.
